Today we are also going to review a single varietal feteasca neagra wine from the Stefanesti vineyards in MunteniaReserve 413 Feteasca Neagra 2018 by Marcea. Feteasca Neagra is an indigenous romanian variety that has been grown for hundreds of years on substantial plantings in the south of Moldova and eastern Muntenia and today, this is the most famous red variety in Romania. Wines made from feteasca neagra grapes are usually fruit-forward, complex and structured, wines that often are compared to merlot and cabernet franc, mostly due to their body, robust tannins and elegant textures. There is a rising demand for feteasca neagra wines both, on the local market as well as on the international markets and many experts name this variety as the visit card of romanian wines. This particular wine is made out of grapes that were harvested from the Stefanesti vineyards in the Arges county, planted on an altitude of 413 meters (hence the wine name – #413) on clay-rich soils and has been aged for 6 months in oak barrels in order to gain more complexity and, at the same time, to preserve the varietal characteristics of the feteasca neagra grapes. That said and without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

Verdict: this is a very fine feteasca neagra wine: fruity-forward, hot and spicy – a wine that is right there, at its apogée, yet one that can withstand another year or two of bottle ageing. It tastes plump but bold, with fine-grained and slightly green tannins, overwhelming acidity and a touch of alcoholic warmth on the mouthfeel that leads to a seedy-green finale. This is a wine that lacks a bit of harmony and finesse on the palate, as in its current state it feels a bit seedy and slightly angular (mostly due to elevated alcohol and acidity). On the nose the wine delivers ripe and dried red fruits in the foreground, supported by a very nuanced, spicy-woody background. All in all this is a very fine and firm feteasca neagra wine that feels well structured, with a ripe and rich nose and a very appealing palate – a real crowd-pleaser. Cheers!
