We will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss our reviews. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations.

Today we are going to review a single-varietal negru de dragasani wine from the Dealu Mare region in MunteniaVia Marchizului Negru de Dragasani 2018 by Viile Metamorfosis. Negru de Dragasani is an indigenous romanian grape variety, obtained as a hybrid crossing between Negru Vartos and Saperavi varieties in 1993. It has medium vigor and good fertility, resistant to frost and mildew. This particular wine is a tribute to the Marchese Piero Antinori, made of grapes that are grown on marl and clay soil on 270 m altitude. It has been aged for several months in oak barrels and is one of the few single varietal negru de dragasani wines on the market. That said and without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

96x96This is definitely a fine wine of Romania and, with a total of 92.9 points scored, this wine is right there, among the best wines we’ve rated so far. Verdict: this is a very fine and delicate wine indeed: fruity-savory, velvety and rustic – a wine that is right there, at the summit of its prime form, yet one that can age for another 2 or 3 years. It feels supple, crisp and round, with a firm body that is formed by mouth-watering acidity, grippy tannins and just a touch of alcoholic warmth on the mouthfeel. This is a wine that does not lack neither body nor structure, as it has a quite ripe and complex palate, with an appealing, seedy-crisp aftertaste – a fine example of how a terrior-driven wine can be crafted using tradition and technology. On the nose the wine displays a nuanced, fruity-savory foreground, followed by an earthy-herbaceous background and a layer of spice in between. This is a wine that impressed us from the first sip and it definitely has its own place in our hearts now.
