Today we’ve decided to review a wine that we were eager to try for quite some time, as it is a genuine Super Tuscan wine from the famous Bolgheri region in ToscanaOrma Toscana 2014 by Tenuta Sette Ponti. The Tenuta Sette Ponti has become one of the properties of the Moretti family when Alberto Moretti bought the initial 50 hectares directly from the princesses Margherita and Maria Cristina Savoia-Aosta. It is in Bolgheri that Antonio Moretti (the son of Alberto Moretti) has left his new footprint, or Orma in italian. Bolgheri has long boasted an impressive reputation in the world of great wines, earning its prestige as one of the most impressive and creative production areas in the world of wine as a result of a number of forward-thinking producers that experimented with international grape varieties like merlot, cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc. This particular wine is a blend of all three of them: 50% merlot, 30% cabernet sauvignon and 20% cabernet franc, sourced from the estate’s vineyards that are planted on south-west facing slopes on clay and stony soils and has been aged for at 12 months in french oak barriques and at least another 12 months in the bottle before being released on the market. But enough theory, that said and without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

96x96This is definitely a great wine of Italy and, with a total of 94.0 points scored, this wine is right there, among the best wines we’ve rated so far. Verdict: this is a true, classic Super Tuscan wine blend: firm, bold and voluptuous – a wine that is right there, at the summit of its prime form, yet one that can withstand another 3 or 4 years of bottle ageing. With fine-grained but ripe tannins, exuberant acidity and just a touch of alcoholic warmth showing through on the mouthfeel, this wine is a fine example of how an iconic blend can be crafted using tradition and technology. It feels round, noble and mature, with a full body and a very well balanced and structured palate. On the nose the wine delivers overripe & dehydrated red & black fruits, mixed with some very noble oaky notes in the foreground, supported by a very intense and expressive, spicy-leathery background and a layer of rustic earthiness in between the two. All in all, this is a really great wine blend – a wine that has both, a distinctive personality and the footprint of the Bolgheri‘s signature terroir. Enjoy!
