Tonight we are going to review a single-varietal cabernet sauvignon wine from the famous Dealu Mare region in MunteniaAnima Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 by Aurelia Visinescu. Cabernet Sauvignon is grown all over the world in a wide range of climates and regions and it usually has high tannins and high natural acidity, thus it can produce wines that can mature and develop for many years in the bottle and because cabernet sauvignon is a late ripening grape variety, it is best suited for warmer climates, where it is capable to produce wines that can reach into realms of perfection. In Romania, cabernet sauvignon was introduced at the start of 20th century after the phylloxera disaster and since then, it has excelled as a variety that suits amazingly well the southern terroirs, especially those found in Dealu Mare. This particular wine has been aged in french (90%) and romanian (10%) oak barrels for 17 months, from which 60% new, with the remaining 40% at second fill, and has been awarded 90 points by Mark Squires of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. That said and without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

Verdict: this is a quite firm, muscular and seedy cabernet sauvignon wine that has just passed the peak of its form, thus ready to drink now or within the next 2 years. This is indeed a wine of great quality, one that delivers firm & grippy tannins, nicely integrated acidity acidity and a touch of alcoholic warmth on the mouthfeel. It has a fruity-savory character, with a full body and a plump, slightly angular palate. On the nose it delivers overripe & dried black fruits in the foreground, supported by a mature, spicy-oaky background and a layer of earthy-savoriness in between the two. All in all, this is a powerful cabernet sauvignon wine that is delivering power on the palate and a pleasantly seedy aftertaste. Cheers!
