Today we are going to review a wine blend from the Segarcea region in southern OlteniaSimfonie 2016 by Domeniul Coroanei Segarcea. This wine is a blend of no fewer than 8 than grape varieties: merlot, pinot noir, syrah, feteasca neagra, marselan, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and touriga nacional. These 8 varieties are blended to compose an inviting harmony, like the notes of a composition, ready to delight anyone’s senses, hence the wine’s name: ‘Symphony‘. The philosophy behind the art of blending presumes that the end result of a wine blending process must be better than each varietal wine taken separately. This particular wine has been aged in big oak foudres (wooden vats that can contain up to 300 hectoliters of wine) in order to preserve the varietal characteristics of each grape variety and to gain more complexity without imposing those oak-derived flavours into the final wine. That said and without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

Verdict: this is a very fine wine blend that is still developing, thus a wine that requires 2 or 3 more years of bottle ageing before it reaches the summit of its prime form. It feels round and voluptuous, with a medium+ body and a supple-plump, slightly opulent palate. The wine has quite grippy tannins, elevated acidity and a touch of alcohol warmth showing through on the mouthfeel, which leads to a seedy-crisp aftertaste. On the nose the wine delivers a plethora of ripe red fruits and savory notes in the foreground, supported by a nuanced earthy-gamey background, with a spicy layer in between the two. Overall this is an old-world-styled wine: well structured and harmonious, with a nuanced savory-earthy profile – a wine that has its own personality and the footprint of the Segarcea terroir.
