We will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss our reviews. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations.

Tonight we are going to review a very intriguing sparkling wine from the Codru region of MoldovaSpumant de Calitate Brut 2017 by Château Vartely. This wine is made only with chardonnay grapes (a style that is called ‘Blanc de Blancs‘) and produced in accordance to the classic champenoise method, also called ‘méthode traditionelle’, with second fermentation in the bottle. With extensive ‘sur lie’ ageing (ageing on fine lees) the wine gets more flavour depth and builds additional body finesse. This particular wine has been bottle aged for at least 9 months, therefore due to that long-term second fermentation in the bottle and further bottle maturation, the wine develops extra complexity and delivers enhanced creaminess on the palate. That said and without further ado, let’s move on straight to the tasting results.

96x96This is definitely a fine wine of Moldova and with a total of 91.9 points scored, this wine is right there, among the best wines we’ve rated so far. Verdict: this is a very refreshing and crisp sparkling wine that is still developing, as it feels seedy-hot and quite firm at this stage. It needs some time to round up, therefore our recommendation is to drink it in the next 3 or 4 years from now. On the nose the wine delivers a fruity-citrusy foreground, supported by a delicate, herbal-leesy background. On the palate the displays mouth-watering acidity, green polyphenols and an overwhelming alcoholic warmth showing through on the mouthfeel. The aftertaste is seedy-hot and slightly angular, as the wine clearly lacks a bit of finesse and elegance, especially on the palate. All in all, this is a very nice sparkling wine that will pair nicely with any seafood dishes or chicken pasta. Cheers!
