Today we are going to review a wine that took its local market by storm from day one – Chardonnay Barrel Fermented 2019 by Chateau Cristi. Chardonnay is regarded by many as the ‘Queen of Whites‘ and is prized for its ability to produce top-notch wines in a wide range of climates and terroirs. Stylistically, there are two main types of chardonnay: one one hand we have the classic, creamy and rich oak-aged style, whereas on the other hand there’s the crisp, zingy and citrusy unoaked style. The wine we are reviewing today is from the first category – a barrel fermented chardonnay, which means that the wine went through the malolactic fermentation – a process where the crisp, malic acid in the wine is converted into a more softer, lactic acid, thus the wine becomes less tart and more silky. In order to get more complexity on the palate as well as on the nose, this wine has been aged for 5 months in two different barrels: oak and acacia. That said and without further ado, let’s move on straight to our tasting results.

Verdict: this is a crisp, plump and hot chardonnay wine, with a voluptuous, woody and well structured palate. The wine is still developing, therefore we would recommend to give it another 2 or 3 years of bottle ageing, in order to allow it to develop further complexity and roundness, as the potential is definitely there. On the nose the wine brings a mixture of overripe and dried fruits and some nuanced oaky notes in the foreground, followed by a very expressive, oaky-sweet background. On the palate the wine delivers elevated acidity and an overwhelming touch of alcoholic warmth showing through on the mouthfeel, which leads to a seedy-crisp aftertaste. All in all, this is a quite appealing, yet slightly angular chardonnay wine that is lacking just a bit of finesse and elegance on the palate. Cheers!
