Today we are going to review a rosé wine from eastern Romania, to be more precise from the Cotnari vineyards in Moldova – Colocviu la Paris Busuioaca de Bohotin 2020 by Casa de Vinuri Cotnari. Rosé is a bizarre wine category, as it isn’t exactly a red wine nor is it a white wine – it is something in between. The secret to the pinkish hue of the rosé wine is found in the skins of the grapes and more exactly in the anthocyanin pigments. When making a red wine, the skins spend the entire fermentation touching the juice, for rosé however the process is shortened, for example pinot noir usually spends around 4 to 6 hours on the skins to produce its trademark pale salmon hue, while cabernet sauvignon needs only a few minutes to make that rich, deep-pink color. This particular rosé wine is made out of busuioaca de bohotin grapes – a romanian variety that originated in Bohotin, near Iasi, and which is very similar to tamaioasa romaneasca. The grapes are purple in color and the resulting wines have slightly purple hues, with nuanced rose petals flavour, strawberries and wildberries. That said, without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

96x96This is definitely a nice wine of Romania and, with a total of 90.4 points scored, this wine is right there, among the best wines we’ve rated so far. Verdict: this is a quite crisp and lean rosé wine, with a very wide and flat feeling on the palate. The wine is right there, at the summit of its prime form, therefore we would recommend to drink it now as it is not meant for long term bottle ageing. On the nose the wine brings ripe berry fruits in the foreground, with some subtle floral hints in the background. On the palate it delivers crisp acidity and an overwhelming touch of alcoholic warmth, leading to a quite rough and austere aftertaste. All in all, this is a quite crisp and slightly angular rosé wine that lacks harmony and finesse on the palate. The wine will pair nicely with a mediterranean avocado salmon salad or an Ahi tuna steak. Cheers!
