Today we are going to review a single varietal feteasca neagra wine from Recas vineyards in Banat region – Melgis 2019 by Petro Vaselo. Feteasca Neagra is an indigenous romanian variety that has been grown for hundreds of years on substantial plantings in the south of Moldova and eastern Muntenia and today, this is the most famous red variety in Romania. Wines made from feteasca neagra grapes are usually fruit-forward, complex and structured, wines that quite often are compared to merlot and cabernet franc, mostly due to their body, fine tannins and elegant textures. There is a rising demand for feteasca neagra wines both, on the local market as well as on the international markets and many experts name this variety as the visit card of romanian wines. This particular wine is made of feteasca neagra grapes, sourced from vines that are planted at 220m altitude on a slightly hilly terrain with mixed composition of clay and limestone soil. In order to preserve the varietal typicity of feteasca neagra grapes, the wine has been aged only for 3 months in oak vessels of different sizes (barrels, casks, vats). That said and without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

Verdict: this is a very round, rich and ripe feteasca neagra wine, with a complex and expressive mouthfeel. The wine is still developing, thus we would recommend to age it for another 3 to 4 years in the bottle in order to develop further complexity, but keep in mind that it is always better to drink a wine a year too soon than a day too late. On the nose the wine brings a mixture of ripe and overripe black and red fruits in the foreground, followed by a nuanced, spicy background and a subtle oaky layer in between the two. On the palate the wine delivers crisp acidity, fine-grained tannins and well integrated alcoholic warmth that is showing through on the mouthfeel, which leads to a very appealing, crisp and seedy aftertaste. All in all, this is one of the best feteasca neagra wine that we have tasted so far: fruity-expressive and harmonious – a wine with a pronounced varietal typicity that displays hints of future finesse. Our recommendation is to pair this wine with delicate, fat-rich meats, like for example Tournedos Rossini or rib-eye steak. Enjoy!
