We will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss our reviews. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations.

Today we are going to review a very special or, dare we say, legendary wine: a single varietal pinot noir from the Lechinta wine growing area in Transylvania – Private Selection Pinot Noir 2015 by Liliac. Pinot Noir has reached a legendary status over the last decades and today it is the most sought-after red wine in the world. The grape itself is quite vulnerable, suffering from a multitude of diseases and its genetics make it highly susceptible to mutation. But despite all the difficulty to grow pinot noir, when treated with utmost care, it is capable of producing the very best expressions of terrior. This particular wine has been crafted in a burgundian style, aged for 8 months exclusively in transylvanian oak barriques in order to fully highlight its origins. That said and without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

Verdict: this is a supple, lean and elegant pinot noir wine, with a plump palate and a nuanced oaky accent on the nose. The wine has already reached the prime of its form and is very close to the decline slope, therefore we would not recommend any further bottle ageing, as it is always better to drink a wine a year too soon than a day too late. On the nose the wine brings a mixture of overripe red fruits, berry fruits and some very nuanced spicy notes in the foreground, followed by a noble, oaky background and an elegant layer of earth and herbs in between the two. On the palate the wine delivers mouth-watering acidity, ripe and fine-grained tannins and an overwhelming touch of alcoholic warmth that is showing through on the mouthfeel, which evolves nicely into a very appealing, seedy-crisp finale. All in all, this is a well structured wine that feels hot, spicy and noble in its own way – a wine that displays in a quite suggestive way those varietal characteristics of pinot noir grapes.
