We will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss our reviews. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations.

Today we are also going to review a single varietal pinot noir wine from the Dealurile Munteniei vineyards in southern Romania – Terra Romana Pinot Noir 2018 by SERVE. Pinot Noir has reached a legendary status over the last decades and today it is the most sought-after red wine in the world. The grape itself is quite vulnerable, suffering from a multitude of diseases and its genetics make it highly susceptible to mutation. But despite all the difficulty to grow pinot noir, when treated with utmost care, it is capable of producing the very best expressions of terrior. In order to preserve the varietal characteristics of the pinot noir grapes, 50% of the wine has been aged in stainless steel tanks, while the other half has been aged for 10 months in french oak barrels in order to gain more structure and complexity. That said and without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

96x96This is definitely a fine wine of Romania and, with a total of 92.1 points scored, this wine is right there, among the best wines we’ve rated so far. Verdict: this is a lean, supple and seedy-hot pinot noir wine, with a delicate and rustic profile, both on the nose and on the palate. The wine is still developing, therefore we would recommend to give it another year or two of bottle ageing in order to allow it to develop further complexity, just make sure you don’t overdo it, as this is not a wine with a great ageing potential. On the nose it brings a mixture of ripe red fruits and savory notes in the foreground, followed by some nuanced and delicate, herbal-earthy hints in the background and a rustic-leathery layer in between the two. On the palate the wine delivers elevated acidity, green and seedy tannins and an overwhelming touch of alcoholic warmth that is showing through on the mouthfeel, which all leads to a seedy-hot aftertaste. All in all, this is a pinot noir wine with nice varietal typicity and a savory-gamey character on the nose, yet a wine that lacks complexity and harmony on the palate. Taking into account the wine’s flavour profile and its structure, we believe it will pair nicely with delicate meats, like for example a rosemary-garlic flank steak. Cheers!
