Today we are going to review a single-varietal riesling wine that comes from the Lechinta wine growing area in Transilvania – Riesling 2020 by Lechburg. Riesling must be the world’s most misunderstood grape variety, as the resulting wines are unlike any others – light in alcohol, high in natural acidity, with the ability to transmit the terrior through its extract and unique aromas and, what makes it stand out from the crowd, riesling wines are capable of ageing for decades. Relative to other internationally grape varieties, riesling ripens quite early, so when planted in a hot climate its juice can be overripe and flabby, while in a cool climate it has the chance to stay on the vine late into the autumn, hence the german obsession with late harvest riesling wines. This wine was made by applying the principles of the organic farming, without the use of synthetic chemicals, but rather a range of natural ingredients, that have the role of starters in harmonization of the biological processes in the soil, where they stimulate microbial life. But enough theory, that said and without further ado, let’s move on straight to our tasting results.

Verdict: this is a very crisp and refreshing riesling wine that feels lean, supple and round, with nuanced herbal-petroleum hints on the nose and a very appealing palate. The wine is still in its development phase, therefore we would recommend to drink it today or in the next 2 or 3 years, just make sure you don’t miss the wine’s apogée, as we firmly believe that it is always better to drink a wine a year too soon than a day too late. On the nose the wine showcases a mixture of ripe and overripe sweet fruits in the foreground, followed by some very nuanced, herbal and petroleum hints  in the background. On the palate the wine delivers mouth-watering acidity and a touch of alcoholic warmth that is showing through on the mouthfeel, which evolves into a appealingly-crisp aftertaste. All in all, this a very fine and nicely balanced riesling wine, that in its current state lacks maybe just a bit of structure and complexity on the palate – a wine with good varietal typicity of the riesling grape variety, that reminding us of those german, riesling wines from Pfalz and Nahe. Just get one and enjoy it, as it has a very good value for money!
