Today we are going to review a single-varietal, grenache rosé wine from the Spain’s not so famous Jumilla wine region on the Mediterranean CoastEl Goru Rosado 2021 by Egobodegas. Jumilla is one of the rising stars of Spain’s wine regions, offering delightfully vibrant wines that are capable to reveal their true potential from their early days as young wines. In the last two decades, Jumilla has built its reputation on three grape varieties: monastrell (or mourvèdre, as it is called in southern France), garnacha (spanish name for grenache) and bobal. This rosé wine is obtained by the Saignée Method and is based solely on the garnacha tinta (the local name for grenache grape variety), that in the past has been ignored in much of the world, even though it is responsible for two of the world’s more famous red wines: Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Priorat. Rosé itself is a bizarre wine category, as it isn’t exactly a red wine nor is it a white wine – it is something in between. The secret to the pinkish hue of the rosé wine is found in the skins of the grapes and more exactly in the anthocyanin pigments. When making a red wine, the skins spend the entire fermentation touching the juice, for rosé however the process is shortened, for example pinot noir usually spends around 4 to 6 hours on the skins to produce its trademark pale salmon hue, while cabernet sauvignon needs only a few minutes to make that rich, deep-pink color. But let’s skip the theory part, and without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

96x96This is definitely a fine wine of Spain and, with a total of 91.7 points scored, this wine is right there, among the best wines we’ve rated so far. Verdict: this is a quite firm, austere and angular rosé wine, with a heady palate and a fruity-expressive nose. The wine is right there, at the peak of its form, as it is not designed for long term ageing, therefore we would suggest to drink it today rather than tomorrow. On the nose the wine brings a mixture of ripe red and berry fruits in the foreground, supported by notes of stone fruits and citrus in the background. On the palate the wine delivers supple acidity and an overwhelming touch of alcoholic warmth that is showing through on the mouthfeel, which evolves into a quite hot aftertaste. All in all, this is an ample and slightly flat rosé wine, with a lively, fruity accent on the nose and a crisp mouthfeel – a wine that in its current state lacks some harmony and balance on the palate. Judging by the wine’s structure and its flavour profile, we believe it will pair lovely with any seafood dishes, like for example an oven baked salmon or a seared Ahi Tuna steak. Cheers!
