Today we are are going to review a single varietal syrah wine from the famous Barossa Valley region of South AustraliaShiraz 2018 by Schild Estate. In a world where bolder is better, syrah is the perfect choice, as it is darker and spicier than cabernet sauvignon and contains a high amounts of health-invigorating antioxidants. Syrah, also known as Shiraz, can be vinified in two major styles: old-world style and new-world style. The old-world syrah wines tend to have more acidity and earthy-herbaceous aromas, while the new-world shiraz wines are usually fruit-driven with lots of spice and hints of smoke. This wine here is a genuine shiraz wine from a hot climate, made from grapes that were sourced from the Lyndoch and Rowland Flat vineyards, aged in seasoned french and american oak hogsheads for a period of 12 to 14 months. But enough with all that theory, that said and without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

96x96This is definitely a fine wine of Australia and, with a total of 92.9 points scored, this wine is right there, among the best wines we’ve rated so far. Verdict: this is a genuine australian shiraz wine that is vinified in a style similar to french syrah from the Rhône Valley and, in our books, this is one of the best syrah/shiraz wines that we have tasted so far: ample, voluptuous and supple, with a pronounced and vibrant fruity-earthy nose and a plump palate. The wine is still in its development phase but very close to the peak of its form, therefore we would recommend to drink it today or within the next 2 or 3 years, just make sure you don’t overdo it, as it is always better to drink a wine a year too soon than a day too late. On the nose the wine displays a mixture of overripe and dehydrated black fruit notes in the foreground, followed by some nuanced, earthy-savory hints in the background and a subtle, spicy-oaky layer in between. On the palate the wine delivers exuberant acidity, smooth tannins and an overwhelming alcoholic warmth on the mouthfeel, which leads to a velvety-crisp aftertaste. All in all, this is a crisp, rich and expressive shiraz wine that has a very appealing rustic delicacy that is quite a rarity in a syrah wine in this part of the world – a mixture between the two worlds, as it combines old-world elegance with new-world vibrancy. We would recommend to pair this wine with dishes that are rich in natural, savoury flavours, like for example a peppercorn-crusted filet mignon or an old-fashioned T-bone steak seasoned with spicy mix. Cheers!
