We will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss our reviews. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations.

Today we are going to review a single-varietal, off-dry riesling wine that comes from the Codru wine growing area of Moldova – Riesling 2021 by Famber Winery. Riesling must be the world’s most misunderstood grape variety, as the resulting wines are unlike any others – light in alcohol, high in natural acidity, with the ability to transmit the terrior through its extract and unique aromas and, what makes it stand out from the crowd, riesling wines are capable of ageing for decades. Relative to other internationally grape varieties, riesling ripens quite early, so when planted in a hot climate its juice can be overripe and flabby, while in a cool climate it has the chance to stay on the vine late into the autumn, hence the german obsession with late harvest riesling wines. But enough theory, that said and without further ado, let’s move on straight to our tasting results.

96x96This is definitely a fine wine of Moldova and with a total of 91.3 points scored, this wine is right there, among the best wines we’ve rated so far. Verdict: this is a very crisp and appealing riesling wine that feels lean, supple and round, with nuanced fruity-jammy hints on the nose and a quite appealing palate. The wine is still in its development phase but very close to its prime form, therefore we would recommend to drink it today or within the next 2 years, as we firmly believe that it is always better to drink a wine a year too soon than a day too late. On the nose it displays a mixture of overripe, dehydrated and jammy sweet fruits in the foreground, supported by some very appealing, floral hints in the background. On the palate the wine delivers exuberant acidity and just a touch of alcoholic warmth that is showing through on the mouthfeel, which evolves into a crisp aftertaste. All in all, this a real crowd-pleaser – a very refreshing riesling wine, that in its current state lacks a bit of structure and complexity on the palate. We believe this wine will pair nicely with some creamy garlic penne pasta or a delicate coquilles Saint-Jacques. Cheers!
