Today we are are going to review a very intriguing wine blend from the famous Emilia-Romagna wine region of northern ItalyBorgo dei Guidi 2018 by Poderi dal Nespoli. This wine is a blend of sangiovese and partially dried cabernet sauvignon grapes, where sangiovese forms the wine’s main body and structure, while cabernet sauvignon adds power, tannin extract and builds a more dynamic finish. The grapes for the final blend are sourced from the Bidente Valley vineyards on the Hills in Romagna, planted on south-facing slopes on clay-rich soils, vineyards that falls under the Rubicone IGT and Nespoli IGT classification. In order to soften the tannins and add extra complexity to the final blend, the wine has been aged for 11 months in french oak barriques and 20 more months of bottle ageing, before it was deemed ready for release on the market. But enough with all that theory, that said and without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

Verdict: this is a very fine Super-Tuscan-styled wine blend that feels rich, ripe and seedy, with a very expressive nose and a firm palate. The wine is still in its development phase but very close to its prime form, therefore we would recommend to either drink it today or age it for another 2 or 3 years, as the potential is clearly there. On the nose the wine displays a mix of ripe and overripe black fruits and some nuanced, oak-derived notes in the foreground, supported by a spicy and earthy background and a very subtle, savory layer in between. On the palate the wine delivers medium acidity, seedy but ripe tannins and quite a touch of alcoholic warmth that is showing through on the mouthfeel, which leads to a bitter-sweet aftertaste. All in all this is a fruit-forward and quite extracted wine blend, vinified in a very distinctive, new-world style, with nuanced spice and oak flavours – a real crowd-pleaser. We believe it will pair lovely with barbecued or spicy meats, like for example a grilled T-bone steak or a marinated flank steak. Cheers!
