Today we are going to review a rosé wine from Romania’s famous Ceptura sub-region in Dealu MareWine Crime Rosé by Crama Ceptura. This wine is a blend of three grape varieties: merlot, cabernet sauvignon and syrah, where cabernet sauvignon forms the wine’s main body and structure, merlot is all about upfront richness, while syrah creates a more dynamic finish. Rosé itself is a bizarre wine category, as it isn’t exactly a red wine, nor is it a white wine – it is something in between. The secret to the pinkish hue of the rosé wine is found in the skins of the red grapes and more exactly in the anthocyanin pigments. When making a red wine, the skins spend the entire fermentation in contact with the juice, for rosé however the process is shortened, for example pinot noir usually spends around 4 to 6 hours on the skins, to produce its trademark pale salmon hue, while cabernet sauvignon needs only a few minutes to make that rich, deep-pink color. That said and without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

On the first nose, the wine offers a delightful olfactory experience with its ripe fruit character. In the foreground, the aroma unfolds with a charming medley of cranberry, redcurrant, red cherry, wolfberry, strawberry, raspberry and wildberry. These delicious fruity notes intertwine harmoniously, creating a vibrant and inviting bouquet. As the fragrance evolves, subtle whispers of citrus and stone fruits emerge in the background, including sicilia orange, red grapefruit, nectarine and hints of peonies. This rosé wine offers a very refreshing and extremely appealing aromatic profile, enhancing a delightful sensory journey.

finish: medium | aftertaste: crisp & sweet

On the palate, this supple and round rosé wine offers an expressive experience that delights the senses. The initial impression is greeted by crisp acidity, subtly balanced with hints of residual sugar, imparting a touch of sweetness. A gentle touch of phenolic bitterness adds depth to the overall flavor profile, while an overwhelming presence of alcoholic warmth slightly overshadows the other elements. Nevertheless, the wine concludes with a crisp and sweet aftertaste, leaving a lasting impression. This rosé wine feels quite firm, bold and structured, thus delivering a bold dimension, contributing to the wine’s overall complexity.

verdict: fine | highly recommended

In conclusion, this wine presents itself as a crisp and quite bold rosé with a rich and full-bodied character – a wine that lacks some finesse and elegance on the palate. The overall tasting experience reveals a slightly angular mouthfeel and a somewhat heady finish. To fully appreciate its virtues, it is highly recommended to serve this wine quite chilled, as this helps to temper the overwhelming alcoholic warmth that lingers on the palate. Despite its minor shortcomings, this rosé wine showcases a flamboyant personality and offers a delicious drinking experience to those who appreciate a more robust style of rosé.

Pairing: Based on the its rich and slightly sweet character, we believe that this rosé wine would pair lovely with a variety of culinary delights. Its ripe fruit character, crisp acidity and full-bodied nature make it an ideal companion for light and refreshing dishes. Consider pairing it with a summer salad adorned with fresh strawberries, cranberries and a citrus-infused vinaigrette to complement the wine’s vibrant fruit profile. Additionally, its touch of residual sugar and crispy-sweet aftertaste would harmonize beautifully with grilled seafood such as shrimp or salmon, bringing out the inherent richness and boldness of both the wine and the dish. For a delightful finale, indulge in a dessert course featuring a berry tart or a peach cobbler, where the wine’s refreshing qualities will cleanse the palate after each luscious bite. Enjoy!
