Today we are going to review a very special wine that took over our hearts from the very first sip – Osânda 2022 & 2021 by DiWinety. This is a multi-vintage (mostly 2022 & with some 2021) and a single-varietal feteasca regala wine, which is one of the most famous and sought after grape variety in both, Romania and Moldova. Feteasca Regala (which translates as ‘royal maiden‘) has been discovered near Sighisoara (Transylvania) in 1920 and is a grape variety that has been obtained by crossing of feteasca alba and grasa de cotnari indigenous grape varieties. It produces crisp, dry and very aromatic white wines. The grapes for this particular wine are sourced from the Codru wine region, but what makes this wine really unique, is the fact that it has been aged between 3 and 18 months in barrels made of different wood types: mulberry, pine and acacia. Needless to mention that this wine has been sold out immediately after its market release. That said and without further ado, let’s move on straight to our tasting results.

intensity: pronounced & floral
fruit character: ripe & underripe

On the first nose, the wine presents a delightful fruit character, marrying a pronounced citrusy-floral foreground with a nuanced malic background, delivering notes of honeysuckle, lemon, lindenflower and asian pear, all mixed with essence of hay, straw grass and tangy notes of cat pee. The foreground is adorned with a captivating citrusy-floral bouquet, where lively notes of lemon zest dance alongside delicate floral undertones, creating an enchanting aromatic symphony. The wine’s olfactory charm lies in its harmonious fusion of ripe and underripe fruit character and subtle woody undertones that add complexity and sophistication to the aromatic profile.

Just a touch of alcoholic warmth adds structure and depth, contributing to the overall richness without overpowering the palate. The finish is marked by a crisp aftertaste, leaving a refreshing and lingering impression. This wine displays a delightful interplay of citrusy-floral flavors, lively acidity, and a lean mouthfeel, which makes it an ideal choice for those seeking for a vibrant and refreshing wine tasting experience.

//Verdict
maturity: in its prime | drink now or within 1 year
verdict: fine | highly recommended | a wine of premium quality with good potential

Overall, this wine is a refreshingly-crisp summer companion, revealing a clean, lean and expressive profile. It is a wine that displays a quite nice varietal typicity of feteasca regala grapes and, while it offers a vibrant and rich aromatic journey, the palate falls slightly short of achieving perfect harmony and finesse. The wine’s pronounced acidity and a touch of alcoholic warmth builds an invigorating palate, yet the overall integration of its elements lacks some much desired elegance. Nonetheless, this wine will make a perfect choice for those seeking for a refreshing white wine that will fill the glass with summer flavours.

Pairing: Based on the wine’s refreshing crispness, vibrant fruit character and lean nature, we would recommend pairing it with a summer-inspired seafood salad. The wine’s bright acidity and crisp aftertaste will complement the delicate flavors of the fresh shrimp, scallops and crab, adding a lively touch to the dish, while the wine’s citrusy-floral profile will enhance the subtle sweetness of the seafood. In the same key, the crisp and lean structure of the wine’s palate will provide a refreshing contrast to the rich and crisp textures of the dish. Noroc!
