We will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss our reviews. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations.

Today we are also going to review a wine from the Valul lui Traian IGP region, situated in the south-west of Moldova – Aurore Albariño – Sauvignon Blanc 2022 by Fáutor Winery. This wine is a intriguing blend of two semi-aromatic grape varieties: albariño (a spanish grape variety, brought to Moldova by the owners of Fáutor Winery), sourced from the small plot of 3 hectares planted near Romanovca village of Leova district in Tigheci, and sauvignon blanc (a very old grape variety that usually makes crisp, aromatic and herbaceous wines, that are popular all over the world), where albariño forms the wine’s main body and structure, while sauvignon blanc adds up-front richness and delivers the much desired natural acidity. But enough theory, that said and without further ado, let’s move on straight to our tasting results.

//Olfactory
intensity: rich & citrusy
fruit character: ripe

On the nose, the wine reveals a burst of ripe fruit aromas, with pronounced citrusy notes, reminiscent of meyer lemon, lime and green grapefruit. Hints of gooseberry and asian pear add complexity to the wine’s citrusy core, while whisper of green apple and chamomile peeks through in the background. Underneath this primary layer lies a touch of herbal nuance, with hints of nettle, clover and currant leaf, adding freshness and complexity to the wine’s aromatic profile.

//Palate
sweetness: dry | acidity: high | alcohol: high | tannin: low | balance: fair
finish: medium | aftertaste: bitter-seedy

The palate takes a surprising turn, dominated by underripe citrus and green fruits. The wine’s crisp acidity creates a sharp and almost aggressive mouthfeel, highlighted by a touch of phenolic bitterness. This sensation is further accentuated by an overwhelming touch of alcoholic warmth, which unsettles the balance of the wine, thus forming a slightly biter and seedy aftertaste.

//Verdict
maturity: in its prime | drink now or within 1 year
verdict: nice | enjoyable & good |a well made wine that lacks elegance and finesse

All in all, this wine presents a bit of a dilemma. The initial burst of ripe citrus and green fruit aromas is quite appealing, hinting at a refreshing experience, however, the palate reveals a very different story. Dominated by underripe fruit flavors and an overwhelming alcoholic warmth, the wine feels angular and somewhat harsh. The lingering bitter and seedy aftertaste further emphasizes the lack of harmony on the palate, resulting in a wine that lacks finesse and synergy between its elements.

96x96This is definitely a nice wine of Moldova and with a total of 91.1 points scored, this wine is right there, among the best wines we’ve rated so far. Pairing: Based on the wine’s zesty character and its pronounced angular mouthfeel, we believe that spicy foods would complement nicely the wine’s sharp edges, therefore a dish like kung pao chicken could be a suitable pairing. The spiciness from the chili peppers in the dish will be balanced by the wine’s acidity, while the richness of the peanuts and the sweetness of the sauce would tame some of the wine’s harshness. Make no mistake, it is not a perfect pairing by any means, but it would create a more balanced tasting experience compared to lighter-flavored dishes. Cheers!
