Today we are going to review a single-varietal feteasca regala wine from the Jidvei DOC of Romania – Mysterium Limited Edition Feteasca Regala 2022 by Jidvei. Feteasca Regala (which translates from romanian as ‘royal maiden‘) is one of the most famous and sought after white grape varieties in Romania and Moldova. It has been discovered near Sighisoara (Transylvania) in 1920 and is a grape variety that has been obtained by crossing of feteasca alba and grasa de cotnari grape varieties. It usually produces crisp, dry and very aromatic white wines, perfect for a warm summer day, but when handled with utmost care by a skillful winemaker, feteasca regala can result in refreshingly elegant wines that can reach into realms of excellence. But enough with all that theory, that said and without further ado, let’s move on straight to our tasting results.

On the nose, the wine unveils a delightful dance of floral and herbal aromas, with notes of grape blossom, lindenflower and honeysuckle, elegantly complemented by hints of fresh herbs, like thyme and lemongrass, that add a touch of complexity and sophistication to the wine’s floral character. Underneath this initial burst lies a subtle layer of green fruits and citrus, reminiscent of asian pears, green apple and lemon zest, adding a touch of freshness to the wine’s aromatic profile.

The palate mirrors the nose with a delightful interplay of ripe fruit flavors and floral notes. The wine’s high acidity keeps the wine lively, balanced by a touch of phenolic bitterness that adds complexity. The wine’s mouthfeel feels round and ample, mostly due to the well-integrated alcohol warmth, culminating with a crisp and slightly seedy aftertaste.

Overall, this is a nicely structured and lean feteasca regala wine that delivers harmony and balance on the palate, with a crisp and ample mouthfeel. While it may lack some of the textbook, feteasca regala‘s varietal intensity, its refreshing and zesty character makes it a quite appealing wine for those who enjoy a lively and well balanced white wine.
