Today we are going to review a rosé wine from Moldova, which is a moldo-italian hora that combines the delicateness of feteasca neagra (75%) with the freshness of pinot grigio (25%) – Vinohora 2022 by Purcari. The wine is part of the ‘Vinohora‘ wine range, build around the philosophy that marries the popular local varieties with famous international ones. Rosé itself is a bizarre wine category, as it isn’t exactly a red wine, nor is it a white wine – it is something in between. The secret to the pinkish hue of the rosé wine is found in the skins of the red grapes and more exactly in the anthocyanin pigments. When making a red wine, the skins spend the entire fermentation in contact with the juice, for rosé however the process is shortened, for example pinot noir usually spends around 4 to 6 hours on the skins, to produce its trademark pale salmon hue, while cabernet sauvignon needs only a few minutes to make that rich, deep-pink color. The grapes for this wine were sourced from all over Moldova in order to deliver that irresistible expressiveness of the fruit, while at the same time, preserving that refreshing acidity that is sought after in any rosé wine. That said and without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

compound
//Olfactory
intensity: rich & dry
fruit character: ripe & dried

On the nose, this rosé wine offers a surprisingly rich and dry character. Cranberries, wolfberries and redcurrants take center stage, their sweetness hinting at dried fruits rather than fresh ones. Underneath this primary layer lies a curious intrigue – a whisper of sawdust mingles with the fruit, adding a subtle dusty complexity. As the wine opens up, a touch of hay emerges in the background, rounding out the aromatic profile with a hint of rustic charm.

sweetness: dry | acidity: medium+ | alcohol: medium+ | tannin: low | balance: good
finish: medium+ | aftertaste: appealingly crisp

The palate lives up to the promise of the nose, delivering a dry and surprisingly firm experience. Ripe berry fruits dance on the mouthfeel, balanced by a crisp acidity that keeps things lively. A nuanced alcoholic warmth adds textural richness, but doesn’t overshadows the fruit. All those elements forms a medium+ finish, leaving a lingering sensation of appealing crispness on the palate.

//Verdict
maturity: in its prime | drink now | do not age
verdict: fine | highly recommended | a quite appealing wine

Overall, it’s a quite appealing wine with a rich, crisp, and slightly hot mouthfeel, making it a refreshing choice for those who enjoy a bolder style of rosé. Though lacking the finesse of premium quality rosé wines, this wine is nicely balanced, while the appealingly-crisp aftertaste keeps it refreshing. This is a rosé wine that is enjoyable today and most likely won’t benefit from further aging. All in all, it’s a very appealing wine that will suit those, who appreciate a richer style of rosé with a touch of rustic charm.

Pairing: The wine’s richness of flavours and crisp acidity make it a versatile food partner. Charcuterie boards with cured meats, hard cheeses, and olives would be a delightful match. The wine’s dusty undertones would complement the savory flavors of the cured meats, while the wine’s crispness would cut through the softness of the cheese, keeping the palate refreshed. Grilled vegetables, like portobello mushrooms or bell peppers would be another option, as the smoky notes from the grill would harmonize with the rustic hints of the wine, while the vegetables would provide a vibrant and juicy contrast. Cheers!
