Today we are going to review a single varietal müller-thurgau wine from the picturesque Trentino Superiore appellation situated in the Alto Adige sub-region of Südtirol in northern ItalyCastel Firmian Müller Thurgau 2022 by Mezzacorona. This wine is crafted from 100% müller-thurgau grapes – a variety that was created by the swiss oenologist Hermann Müller, by crossing riesling and madeleine royale grape varieties. The grapes for this wine were sourced from the mountainous Cembra Valley, where müller-thurgau thrives in the alpine climate, helped by the high elevation and diverse geology of the area.

Müller Thurgau is known to be hyper-productive and thus, most wines produced in the paste were somewhat boring. That said, with careful care in the vineyard and by applying modern winemaking techniques, this grape variety is capable to produce wines with the same complexity as fine rieslings.

Taken up with much enthusiasm by german growers after the World War II, müller-thurgau had the practical advantages of ripening extremely early, before the arrival of autumn rains in most years, and, unlike riesling or silvaner, yields reliably on almost any site. The disadvantage were that the final wine, especially if produced from high yields, can have little character and be very short of natural acidity.

The geographical features of Alto-Adige significantly contribute to each wine’s unique characteristics. The Cembra Valley, located in Trentino in northern Italy, features a unique geological background, shaped by ancient glaciers and fast-running rivers that contribute to the region’s fertile viticultural landscape.

Most of the vineyards in this area are located at altitudes ranging from 400 to 800 meters, providing ideal sun exposure during the day and cooler temperatures at night, which promotes significant diurnal temperature variation, which helps to maintain the natural acidity in the grapes and contributes to the development of complex aromatics. The predominant rock and limestone soil composition ensures excellent drainage, fostering quality fruit development that encourage the production of complex wines.

The mountains, altitude, hilly slopes, and continental climate create a diverse microclimate, essential for cultivating a wide range of grape varieties. Compared to similar wines from other regions, Alto-Adige often exhibits a greater depth of flavor and a refreshing acidity. While the cool night-time winds from the Mendel Massif and limestone gravel soils create an ideal environment for cultivating white grape varieties.
