Maestro Wines is renowned for its commitment to crafting exciting wines, a winery that embodies the passion for meticulous craftsmanship. With its vineyards planted in Moldova’s Valul lui Traian and Stefan Voda regions, the winery takes pride in its organic practices and deep-rooted philosophy that respects the local traditions but with a modern twist.
Today we are going to review a quite refreshing rosé wine from the Stefan-Voda, which is Moldova’s most famous wine region – Pinot Noir 2023 by Maestro Wines. This is a modern rosé wine, made only with pinot noir grapes – a grape variety famous for its delicacy that produces light-bodied wines.
Rosé itself is a bizarre wine category, as it isn’t exactly a red wine, nor is it a white wine – it is something in between. The secret to the pinkish hue of the rosé wine is found in the skins of the red grapes and more exactly in the anthocyanin pigments. When making a red wine, the skins spend the entire fermentation in contact with the juice, for rosé however the process is shortened, for example pinot noir usually spends around 4 to 6 hours on the skins, to produce its trademark pale salmon hue, while cabernet sauvignon needs only a few minutes to make that rich, deep-pink color.

The Stefan Voda wine region is distinguished by its diverse landscapes and warm continental climate, which allows for optimal grape ripening, especially suited for red grape varieties. The soil is rich in minerality, comprising clay and loam, that provides excellent drainage and supports vital nutrients for the vine growing. This unique soil composition, combined with the region’s distinct microclimate, that balances an abundance of sun exposure with refreshing rainfall, tempered by the cool breezes from the Black Sea, contributes to the expressive and rich profile of the resulting wines.

maturity: in its prime | drink now or within a year
verdict: nice | enjoyable & good | a well made wine that lacks elegance and finesse
Overall, this wine presents a quite rich expression that balances vibrancy with simplicity. While it may lack complexity compared to Provence rosé wines, it excels with its refreshingly pleasant palate, making it ideal for summer enjoyment. The wine is currently ready to be enjoyed and is best consumed within the next 9 or 10 months in order to appreciate its utmost freshness.

This wine pairs phenomenally with seafood dishes, particularly baked salmon or mahi-mahi fillets, where its acidity would cut through the richness of the fish. Additionally, it complements light salads and charcuterie boards, enhancing the overall dining experience with a harmonious balance of flavors.
