Crama La Salina is nestled in the heart of the Transylvania, founded with a vision to revitalize the rich viticultural traditions of Romania. The winery emphasizes sustainability and respect for the local terroir, by crafting wines which are capable to maximize the cool climate of Transylvanian Hills.
Today we are going to review a single-varietal riesling wine that comes from Dealurile Transilvaniei wine region of Romania – Issa Rhein Riesling 2023 by Crama La Salina. Riesling must be the world’s most misunderstood grape variety, as the resulting wines are unlike any others – light in alcohol, high in natural acidity, with the ability to transmit the terrior through its extract and unique aromas and, what makes it stand out from the crowd, riesling wines are capable of ageing for decades. Relative to other international grape varieties, riesling ripens quite early, so when planted in a hot climate its juice can be overripe and flabby, while in a cool climate it has the required time to stay on the vine late into the autumn, hence the german obsession with late harvest riesling wines. Dry styles of riesling are becoming increasingly popular lately, one can identify them by the term “Trocken” on the label (which translates as “dry”).

The vineyards surrounding Crama La Salina benefit from a moderate to cool continental climate, influenced by the nearby Carpathian Mountains, suited mostly to white grape varieties, especially local grapes like Fetească Regală, Fetească Albă, and of course Riesling, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, which thrive in these conditions, or thin skinned red grapes, such as Pinot Noir or Fetească Neagră. This microclimate allows for a relatively-long ripening season, essential for the development of complex aromatic compounds within the grape berries. The mineral-rich soils, composed mainly of clay and limestone, provide excellent drainage while also retaining enough moisture to support vine growth. The significant diurnal temperature variation between day and night temperature preserves the high natural acidity of the grapes, resulting in fresh and vibrant wines with good aging potential.

intensity: rich & sweet
fruit character: dried
On the nose, the wine brings an enticing bouquet of aromas, where dehydrated orchid fruit notes dominate the profile, with dried pear, dried quince, dried apricot and dried apple leading the charge. Underlying the dehydrated fruits are herbal notes (hay, straw grass and lemongrass) with subtle floral hints of honeysuckle that are rounded by a distinct late harvest sweetness with notes of figs and raisins.

sweetness: off-dry | acidity: high | alcohol: high | tannin: low | balance: good
finish: medium | aftertaste: crisp
On the palate, the wine delivers an invigorating experience – it is nicely balanced, with refreshing acidity that cuts through the luscious fruit. Flavors of green apple, nectarine, and hints of citrus fruit mingle harmoniously with slight hints of micro-oxidation. The finish is medium, with a crisp aftertaste that is leaving a lingering trace of citrus zest and a delightful touch of sweetness that invites for another sip.

maturity: in its prime | drink now or within a year
verdict: nice | enjoyable & good | a well made wine that lacks elegance and finesse
Overall, this is a commendable expression of this classic grape variety. The wine’s bright acidity, dried fruit, and herbal character makes it both approachable and complex. That being said, the wine does lack the elegance and complexity of those dry to off-dry alsatian rieslings.

Consider pairing this wine with grilled shrimp and citrus salsa, spicy-sweet asian cuisine, or even sushi. It is also an excellent companion to creamy cheeses such as Brie or goat cheese, where the wine’s acidity would cut through the rich texture of the cheese, creating a memorable tasting experience.

The name ‘Issa’ pays homage to the ancient roman name of the city of Turda, which is where Crama La Salina is located. The ruins of Potaissa, once a thriving roman settlement, remain remarkably well-preserved to this day. Perched on the Citadel Hill plateau, the remnants of the roman castrum – once occupied by the Fifth Macedonian Legion, offer a glimpse into history.
