WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.

We will continue tasting Wine of Moldova, and this time we’ve chosen a grape variety that is on demand on mappemonde nowadays – cabernet sauvignon. There are many good to very good cabernet sauvignon wines in Moldova and, to be honest, we’ve had quite a hard time choosing one – Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 from Equinox.

Let’s take a deeper look at the tasting notes and the wine’s review statistics:

Visual
The wine has a noble-pure garnet color, it is dense and opaque, with the rim-color on the ruby side.

Olfactory

The nose is clean and strong with no signs of wine faults. The first nose reveals strong notes of black fruits – dried black cherry, black plum and black currant, then come the secondary aroma, those of red spice pepper and a smooth sun dried wood flavor, a clear tell that the wine was oak-aged in a french barique.

gustatory_rouge
Gustatory

The wine is dry, but not sharp, with no signs of residual sugar and is just a bit higher on alcohol than expected, with moderate acidity and ripe-dry tannin. The overall balance is good with a slight lack of acidity, which means that the grapes were harvested when fully ripe, making it rich in alcohol but just a little short in acidity.

Aftertaste

The wine has a quite long finish, long enough to make you fall in love with it’s velvety, and a little bit bitter aftertaste, which fills your mouth and makes you think of a medium roasted stake with sweet cabernet sauce.

chartsThis is definitely a great Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 90.0 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Please click on the chart icon on the left in order to get to the wine rating page, where you can find all the wines we’ve tasted to date.

Last but not least, we would like to mention that this wine is a perfect example of how good a cabernet sauvignon from Moldova can be, a fact underlined by the most respected wine critic in the world – Jancis Robinson. This wine has a very good ageing potential and a nuanced fruit-forward profile, which makes it fit into the new-world cabernet sauvignon category – the most in-demand wine style these days.
