WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.
We will keep tasting Wine of Moldova for the time being, and we’ve decided to keep within the cabernet sauvignon trend. There aren’t many wine makers in Moldova who do not offer cabernet sauvignon wines on the market nowadays, and guess what – we’ve had quite a dilemma choosing one from the many available, and here it is – Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 from Cricova.
Let’s take a deeper look at the tasting notes and the wine’s review statistics:
Visual
The wine has a clear ruby color, it is dense but clear enough so that the light can pass through the wine, the rim-color is on the copper side.
Olfactory
The nose is clean and rich with no signs of wine faults. The dominant flavors on the first nose are those of red fruits – sour cherry and red plum, later on, the nose is delighted with just a hint of pomegranate and an intense wood flavor – a clear sign of barrel maturation.
Gustatory
The wine is dry but soft, with no signs of residual sugar. The alcohol level is right there, where you’d expect, high acidity and dry tannin are a clear sign why this wine is so good after so many years of bottle-age. The overall balance is good to very good, lacking just a bit of sweetness.
Aftertaste
The wine has a long, velvety-like finish, tending more towards the sour side of the taste spectrum instead of the much anticipated bitter side, common for the majority of cabernet based wines.
This is definitely a fine Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 88.5 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Please click on the chart icon on the left in order to get to the wine rating page, where you can find all the wines we’ve tasted to date.
Last but not least, taking into consideration it’s age, this wine is a classic example of how good an aged cabernet sauvignon from Moldova can be – rich aroma, well balanced body and a velvety finish – we were really surprised to be honest – just try one yourself.
