WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.
We continue with Wine of Moldova and we still keep the rosé wine theme – that delicious, light and refreshing wine style that is growing in popularity with each passing season. Wine of Moldova is gaining more and more followers on its own, and so does the popularity of rosé wines out there. The wine that we’ve selected today is Merlot Rosé 2013 from F’autor.
Let’s take a deeper look at the tasting notes and the wine’s review statistics:
Visual
The wine has a very clear pink color – bright and transparent – with the rim-color of a pale salmon pink shade.
Olfactory
The nose is strong and sharp, with no signs of wine faults. The first nose brings very clear notes of sweet berry fruits – strawberry, raspberry, wolfberry, jotsaberry and a hint of mirabelle and roses. Later on the nose is delighted with some sweet notes of candied strawberry, raspberry jam and candied wolfberry.
Gustatory
The wine is medium-dry, with some hints of residual sugar. The alcohol level is higher than desired from a rosé wine, which makes the wine taste bitter-seedy and a little aggressive. High acidity and medium tannin makes it taste crisp and light, while the overall balance is good. The wine is quite refreshing and a little opulent towards the middle of the palate.
Aftertaste
The wine has a medium-plus finish with a velvety aftertaste, that brings back memories of home made wolfberry juice and candied raspberry.
This is definitely a fine Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 87.8 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Last but not least, this wine has been already awarded a bronze medal by Decanter World Wine Awards – the leading wine-tasting competitions of the world. It is no small feat if you ask us – only a couple of rosé wines from Moldova managed to get a bronze medal at DWWA. We also couldn’t miss out on the fact that this is the first rosé wine from the winemaker’s cellars, and as the saying goes – all good things must come in pairs – so does this one, it has a twin, but if this one is made of 100% merlot grapes, its sibling is made of 100% cabernet sauvignon grapes. We do like the character this wine has, and we are quite intrigued about the other one – but that’s a different story for a different time.
