WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.
Keeping within the Wine of Moldova theme, we switch our attention to white wines – yes, those crisp and refreshing liquids stored in fancy colored bottles. This time it was easy to choose one for the review – we’ve decided to dig deeper into our personal collection and we’ve selected a wine that was a legend 10 years ago, sadly, not anymore – now it is not only forgotten, it is almost impossible to buy. The wine that we are reviewing today is Firebird Legend Pinot Grigio 2009 from DK-Intertrade.
Let’s take a deeper look at the tasting notes and the wine’s review statistics:
The wine has a clear and transparent yellow color, with a translucent green rim-color.
The nose is rich, with quite annoying hints of cork taint in the beginning, which disappears after half an our of aeration. The first nose is sharp and it brings notes of sweet, but not fully ripe, fruits mixed with some sour notes of yellow apple, quince, lemon, bell pepper, mirabelle and green pear.
The wine is dry with some hints of bitterness, moderate alcohol and high acidity. It tastes bitter and zesty, quite green and a little austere. The final balance is good but it feels tight, while still being refreshing and crisp.
The wine has a medium-long finish with a velvety and balanced aftertaste. It is not as pleasant or refreshing as desired, but it is as much as expected from an old white wine.
This is definitely a fine Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 87.4 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Last but not least, there was a time when this wine was a point of reference for those who made pinot grigio wines in Moldova – it has collected 3 awards on international scene with previous vintages (commended, bronze and silver), but those times a long gone by and with them, all of the magic of a young pinot grigio wine. Time can improve a great wine but destroy a good one, the conclusion is simple: drink it while still young.
