WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.

We are tasting Wine of Moldova once again and we’ve decided to raise the bar even higher than before – this time we will be back to the world’s most underrated grape variety – merlot. The wine that we are going to review today is one of the most complete wine on the internal market – Molda Merlot 2011 from Berhord-Vin. This is a world class merlot wine – it has the complexity of a blend, but it never loses its profile and personality.

Let’s take a deeper look at the tasting notes and the wine’s review statistics:

Olfactory

The nose is clean and strong with no signs of wine faults. The first nose reveals a sharp mixture of dried fruits and black fruits – overripe sour cherry, dried cherry, black cherry, dried plum, black mulberry and wildberry. The secondary aroma brings clear notes of a medium roasted wood, wormwood, red oak, red pepper and tea. The final is sweet, with notes of mulberry jam, black plum jam and a hint of tobacco.

Gustatory

The wine is dry with no hints of residual sugar. It has high alcohol, moderate acidity and dry tannin. This is a quite masculine wine: astringent, massive and smoky – a wine to remember. The overall balance is good – the wine is dense and well structured, with a highlighted smooth bitterness.

Aftertaste

The wine has a quite long finish with a velvety, just a bit astringent, aftertaste. It reminds you of Moldova’s traditional cherry pies and overripe, early summer, sour cherries – a pure delight.

chartsThis is definitely a great Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 90.5 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Last but not least, it is to be mentioned that this wine was already awarded a silver medal by Concours Mondial de Bruxelles and a commended award by International Wine Challenge – two of the world’s most appreciated wine contests. Those two accolades speaks for themselves, and we can only subscribe and add that this is the best merlot wine we’ve tasted to date – powerful but delicate, complex but elegant, in one word – epic. And there’s more – the previous vintage of this wine was awarded two commended accolades by the same contest at International Wine Challenge, which speaks a lot about the quality of this wine and its consistency over the time. This is definitely the best merlot wine from Moldova at the moment.
