WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.
We will continue reviewing Wine of Moldova, and we’ll go back to the wine blend theme for a while. The wine that we’ve chosen today is a very popular one – it is sold out for a year now, but it can still be found in private collections, because it is regarded as one of the best wines of Moldova to date. It is not a classic Bordeaux blend, because the cabernet sauvignon was smoothed by merlot and enchanted by syrah – a quite brave approach, that led to this noble wine – Taraboste Pur Aristocratic Rezerva 2009 from Château Vartely.
Let’s take a deeper look at the tasting notes and the wine’s review statistics:
Visual
The wine has a clear, deep and opaque ruby color, with the rim-color of a pale garnet-copper shade.
Olfactory
The nose is clean and strong with no signs of wine faults. The first nose reveals strong notes of dried black fruits and smoke – dried sour cherry, smoked black plum, blackcurrant, black plum, sour cherry, black cherry, overripe pomegranate, black mulberry and red apple. The second nose brings very clear and tannic notes of red pepper, medium roasted wood, red olive and black tea.
Gustatory
The wine is dry with no hint of residual sugar. It is a bit high on alcohol, with moderate acidity, a bit lower than desired, and dry tannin, it forms a good overall balance. The wine tastes quite tannic and a bit bitter, seedy-green and woody. It is well structured, extracted and nuanced, with a firm, just a bit smoky body.
Aftertaste
The wine has a quite long finish, with a velvety, just a bit astringent aftertaste. It feels quite concentrated and round – this is the kind of wine that you will think twice before uncorking, as it requires a good company and a rare done beef steak to complement it.
This is definitely a fine Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 89.0 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Last but not least, we would like to mention that this wine was awarded a commended accolade at International Wine Challenge – one of the leading wine contests of the world, and two silver medals at Mundus Vini International Wine Award. These accolades are a clear tell that this is a fine premium wine, with a bold, well structured body and a dense, tannic profile that will make you nod in approval. This is that kind of wine that will change your opinion about wine blends, regardless of what it was before.
