WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.
We are still discovering Wine of Moldova for the time being and this time we’ve decided to review something really special – a wine that is already a legend alive – Cuvée Aleksandr Brut from Acorex Wine Holding. This is a crémant wine, made in a classic, méthode traditionelle style, exactly the same way as original champagne is being made in France, and it is special because it is made of chardonnay and pinot blanc grapes, a wine-making style called ‘blanc de blancs‘.
Let’s take a deeper look at the tasting notes and the wine’s review statistics:
Visual
The wine has a pure ivory-white color, slightly into the green side of the spectrum, with a very clear yellow-green rim color.
Olfactory
The nose is rich and clean, with no signs of wine faults. The first nose is sharp and insistent, it bring notes of sweet fruits & citrus: yellow apple, green pear, acacia flower, pamela, gooseberry, lemon and white grapefruit. Later one, as the temperature rises, the wine will open up with notes of moist wood and chalkstone.
Gustatory
The wine is medium dry with moderate, well integrated, alcohol level. High acidity, a very important element of every crémant wine, is very well integrated into the body and, in tandem with medium tannin, forms a good and delightful overall balance. The wine tastes fresh, bitter and crisp at the same time, it also feels quite smooth on the mouth-feel.
Aftertaste
The wine has a long-to-medium, quite complex, but well structured and velvety aftertaste. It tastes refreshing, the same way as a classic, méthode traditionelle sparkling wine should be.
This is definitely a great Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 90.4 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Last but not least, it is to be mentioned that this wine was already awarded a total of six accolades on international scene. It all started with the three silver medals for the 2003, 2004 vintages and the non-vintage wine tasted tonight, at the most prestigious wine contest for sparkling wines – Effervescents du Monde. Then it was awarded two more silver medals for the 2004 and 2005 vintages, at Mundus Vini International Wine Award, and, the cherry on the pie, it gets a bronze medal for the 2007 vintage, at Decanter World Wine Awards – the most influential wine tasting contest of the world of wine. Quite impressive for a Wine of Moldova, and it speaks volumes about the quality of this wine and it’s consistency over the time. As a footnote, we would like to mention that it is not yet known if we will ever see a newer edition of this wine, that’s why mark our words – get one of these as long as it is still available in the wine shops.
