WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.
We continue to review Wine of Moldova and we are still on the white wine theme, but this time it’s the noblest of all whites – chardonnay. In order to explore this wine style at it’s true potential, we’ve decided to try something new – a fresh released, oaked chardonnay that is part of a legendary series – Taraboste Pur Aristocratic Chardonnay 2013 from Château Vartely. This wine was made in an old fashioned, sometimes forgotten, but mostly underrated, style – it is aged for 6 months in new oak barrels, like a Grand Cru Côte de Beaune chardonnay.
Let’s take a deeper look at the tasting notes and the wine’s review statistics:
The wine has a bright, pure straw-green color, with a translucent, brilliant yellowish rim-color.
The nose is strong with no signs of wine faults. The first nose is sharp and quite insistent, it brings delightful notes of sweet summer fruits: white pear, gooseberry, quince, sweet melon, candied pineapple, white apple, white cherry, apricot and lemon. The second nose bring some savory notes of wormwood, green olive and a hint of butter. The end is topped with a very subtle aroma of acacia blossom.
The wine is medium-dry, with just a hint of residual sugar. It has quite a high alcohol level and moderate acidity. It tastes silky and a bit oily, but delicious and smooth. Medium tannin level makes it taste a bit seedy and a bit lean, but the good overall balance makes the wine taste rich, expressive and complete.
The wine has a long finish and a silky-velvety aftertaste, a bit sharp and rough, but quite smooth and elegant.
This is definitely a fine Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 89.4 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Last but not least, it is to be mentioned that we’ve been quite impressed by this wine – a classic, barrel fermented chardonnay, full-bodied, with delicate buttery-oily notes, and, as it seems, we’re note alone in our appreciation – one of the previous vintages of this wine was awarded a silver medal by Mundus Vini International Wine Award – one of the world’s most influential wine-tasting competition, which says quite a lot about this wine’s quality. We would also like to mention that we were mesmerized by this wine’s aroma profile – this is an aristocratic wine indeed.
