ET CETERA | Cuvée Rouge | 2012
cabernet sauvignon | merlot | saperavi | rara neagra

WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.

We continue to review Wine of Moldova for the time being, and we are still on the wine blend theme. Tonight we will review a wine that is quite fresh released on the market – Cuvée Rouge 2012 from Et Cetera. This wine is different from the many other blends, for it is made up of four different varieties – two international and two regional – a quite good example of how unique a Wine of Moldova can be.

Let’s take a deeper look at the tasting notes and the wine’s review statistics:

The wine has a deep-clear garnet color, with the rim-color of a pure and translucent garnet shade.

The nose is clean and strong, with no signs of wine faults. The first nose brings very clear and nuanced notes of red fruits – the accent is on the sour cherry – sour cherry, candied sour cherry, sour cherry pie, red currant, cranberry, wolfberry and red mirabelle. A bit later comes secondary notes of red olive, blackberry and light roasted wood.

The wine is bone dry with no signs of residual sugar. It has moderate, well integrated alcohol level, quite high acidity and dry tannin. This is an expressive young wine – bitter-seedy and extracted, with a zesty-tart accent – rich, nuanced and full bodied. The wine has a good overall balance – this is a firm, bold wine, that still needs a couple of years of bottle maturation to smoother that little excess of tannin and acidity that dominates the palate.

The wine has a long finish and velvety aftertaste. It is a little bitter in the middle and a bit acrid towards the end, but it leaves a quite pleasing feeling in the mouth.

chartsThis is definitely a fine Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 88.8 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Last but not least, it is to be mentioned that this is the second release of this wine on the market, the first one was the non-oaked version, while now we have the oaked quote of this same wine. This is a quite smart move, as the winemaker gets into some kind of win-win situation: the wines are easier to be sold (the consumer has a choice) as it gets the feedback of the consumer regarding its preferences (oaked or unoaked) and it gets the much needed experience in making those fancy, delicate and charming oak-aged wines.
