WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.
We are tasting Wine of Moldova once again and we’ve decided to go back to cabernet sauvignon theme – the most popular red wine grape variety. It is also the type of wine that every winemaker in Moldova will try to produce sooner rather than later, and so happens, that there is a quite ‘new’ cabernet sauvignon wine released on the marked under an original and quite intriguing trademark – Ulmu Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 from Vinaria Poiana. So, we’ve decided to give it a go.
Let’s take a deeper look at the tasting notes and the wine’s review statistics:
The wine has a very clear ruby color – it is quite transparent, with the rim-color of a smooth garnet shade.
The nose is rich and fresh, with no signs of wine faults. The first nose brings pronounced notes of red fruits: ripe cherry, candied cherry, sour cherry, red currant, violets and fig. The second wave brings some delicate notes of red pepper, a bit of oregano and a nuanced scent of a medium roasted wood – a clear tell that the wine was barrel maturated.
The wine is medium-dry, with just a hint of residual sugar. It has high alcohol level, high acidity and medium tannin, which makes it taste a bit green and wide – a bit sharp and mellow at the same time. The overall balance is good – the wine feels a bit rough, but quite fresh and zesty, with just a bit higher alcohol level than expected, but the most nuanced aspect of this wine is it’s woody character – it brings a quite pleasant and, at the same time, savory mouth-feel.
The wine has a long to medium finish, with a balanced, a bit sharp aftertaste and a spicy feeling towards the end.
This is definitely a fine Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 87.5 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Last but not least, we would like to highlight that this wine is part of the first wine range from the winemaker’s cellar, and to be honest it is a very good one. We would also like to highlight the hard work and the real potential of the winemaker who made this wine – a classic example of Moldova’s small wine producers, who made themselves a name in the last decade – young and ambitious, who know what they want, know how to do it and are doing just that. We, on our part, can only admire their drive and determination, enjoy their wine and share it with the ones we love.
