WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.

We continue to taste Wine of Moldova and we are heading towards the merlot wine zone – the most underrated red grape variety. There are quite a lot of winemakers who, sooner or later, will try their skills in making a premium merlot wine, but only a few of them will succeed. Anyway, a high end merlot wine is not a hard find anymore even here in Moldova these days, that’s why, this time, the wine that we’ve chosen was easy to pick – Merlot 2012 from Mimí.

Let’s take a deeper look at the tasting notes and the wine’s review statistics:

Visual
The wine has a noble-clear garnet color, it is deep and opaque, with the rim-color of a clear garnet shade.

Olfactory

The nose is clean and strong with no signs of wine faults. The first nose reveals strong notes of ripe black fruits: black cherry, dried cherry, black plum, black currant, black raspberry and black mulberry. Later on come some delicious notes of ripe pomegranate, black olive and wormwood. The end is crowned by a toasted wood aroma in tandem with some black pepper and black tea notes, with a hint of black chocolate.

Gustatory

The wine is dry, with no signs of residual sugar and high, but well integrated alcohol level. It has high acidity and dry tannin, which makes it taste seedy, sharp and muscular. This is a big and expressive wine – dense and bold, with a nuanced, quite persistent, spicy profile. The overall balance is good, with maybe just a bit too much woody accent.

Aftertaste

The wine has a long, bitter-sweet finish, with a velvety and maybe just a bit astringent aftertaste, that lasts quite a while.
