WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.

We continue to review Wine of Moldova and we’ve decided to change a bit the style – we’re switching to the dessert wine theme, and to be more accurate, to the late harvest wine theme. And while we were trying to figure it out of which wine should get the nod, a thought has crossed our minds – why not continue where we’ve started last time, with a legend alike,  a veteran and a pioneer of late harvest wines of Moldova – Sonaletto Muscat Late Harvest 2006 from from Acorex Wine Holding.

Let’s take a deeper look at the tasting notes and the wine’s review statistics:

Visual
The wine has a noble and clear amber-brick color, with the rim-color of a pure golden shine.

olfactory_blanc
Olfactory

The nose is strong, with no signs of wine faults. The first nose is sharp and insistent and it brings very clear notes of jammy fruits and honey: walnut jam, white cherry jam, honey, raisin, walnut, dried sweet melon, melted sugar, dried banana and white mulberry jam. It’s an explosion of jam and candy.

Gustatory

The wine is extra-sweet, with great amount of residual sugar. It has moderate alcohol, moderate-plus acidity and low tannin level, which makes the wine taste jammy, honeyed and extracted, with just a bit less tannin than expected. The overall balance is good – the wine tastes oily, rich and quite concentrated. Towards the end of the palate, some oxidation notes can be detected, but those were to be expected – time is relentlessly even to the sweetest of wines.

Aftertaste

The wine has a long finish and a velvety-silky aftertaste – it feels a bit low on tannin, but very sweet and smooth overall – like a fruit balsam.

chartsThis is definitely a fine Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 88.8 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Please click on the chart icon on the left in order to get to the wine rating page, where you can find all the wines we’ve tasted to date.

Last but not least, we would like to mention that this is an amazing late harvest dessert wine, it did stand the test of time, and it can be served as an aperitif, or as a dessert drink after the main meal. Also, it is to be mentioned that this wine is a perfect pairing partner for any dessert plate or any other dish with sweet accent – smooth and oily, it will round up the palate and underline the sweet notes of the dessert. As a side note, we would like to add that there will be no new vintages of this wine, nor any other wines signed by the above mentioned winemaker, so let us enjoy these legendary wines as long as we can and pay homage to the people who gave heart and soul in making all of this possible.
