WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.
We continue to review Wine of Moldova, but this time we’ve decided to leave the wine blend theme for a while and switch to the king of reds – cabernet sauvignon. We’ve already mentioned that there are quite some high-end cabernet sauvignon wines in Moldova and, to be honest, we’ve had quite a hard time choosing one, again, so here it is – Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 from Gitana Winery.
Let’s take a deeper look at the tasting notes and the wine’s review statistics:
The wine has a clear garnet color, it is dense and quite opaque, with the rim-color of a clear ruby shade.
The nose is clean and rich with no signs of wine faults. The first nose unleashes fresh notes of black fruits and hints of barrel maturation: black cherry, overripe sour cherry, black currant, black mulberry, smoked plum, truffles, cloves, nutmeg, red pepper, black tea and the noble-elegant aroma of a heavy roasted oak-wood, that turns into charred wood if you try one more sniff.
The wine is extra dry, a bit seedy and quite spicy, with no signs of residual sugar. It is strong and bold, with high, but well integrated alcohol level, moderate acidity and dry tannin. It feels expressive and toasty at the same time. The wine has a fair overall balance – it is quite dense and extracted – a wine with character.
The wine has a medium, bitter-seedy finish, with a balanced aftertaste – quite spicy and hot.
This is definitely a fine Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 89.7 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Last but not least, we would like to highlight the overall potential of a cabernet sauvignon from Moldova, this is a quite powerful wine, with a full body and a very distinct structure, it’s fruit-forward, it’s new world style, where barrel maturation dominates over variety, a wine with a strong character and a quite spicy aftertaste. To be honest, we are impressed – and this is not the first time we are – a fine cabernet sauvignon wine is not a hard find anymore, even here in Moldova.
