WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.
We continue to review Wine of Moldova, and we are back to the wine blend theme for a reason. The wine that we’ve chosen for the review tonight is a legendary one – its history dates back a couple of centuries and its blending formula is unchanged since. This is the most famous wine of Moldova, a wine with a worldwide renomé, a wine loved by monarchs and a wine that needs no introduction at all – Negru de Purcari 2010 from Chateau Purcari.
Let’s take a deeper look at the tasting notes and the wine’s review statistics:
Visual
The wine has a clear ruby color, it is dense and opaque, with the rim-color of a translucent garnet shade.
Olfactory
The nose is rich and insistent, with no signs of wine faults. The first nose reveals clear notes of black fruits and berries: black cherry, blackberry, black raspberry, mulberry, sour cherry and plum. After a while comes those noble notes of violets, tomato leaf, lavender, nutmeg, cloves, leather and some elegant notes of a medium roasted oak-wood.
Gustatory
The wine is bone dry with no hints of residual sugar. It has moderate-plus, but well integrated alcohol level, moderate-plus acidity and quite dry tannin. This is a firm, complex and elegant wine, it has a bitter-tannic profile, with some nuanced rustic notes. The wine has a fair overall balance – it feels bold, leathery and spicy at the same time.
Aftertaste
The wine has a medium-plus finish, long enough to make you fall in love with it’s balanced and velvety aftertaste.
This is definitely a great Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 90.5 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Last but not least, it is to be mentioned that this wine has been awarded a bronze medal by Decanter World Wine Awards and two more bronze medals by International Wine & Spirit Competition – the most demanding wine-tasting competitions in the world of wine – a simple fact that says quite a lot about the quality of this wine. We can only add that this is one of the best wines from Moldova indeed and one of the best wines we’ve tasted to date – a wine that could be easily compared with the most famous wine blends from all over the world, especially to those from the old world. As an epilogue, we would like to leave you with this positive message: ‘Takk, Norge!‘, if you know what we mean.
