pinot gris
WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.
We continue to review Wine of Moldova, but we change the vector a bit, towards the pinot gris wine theme – one of the most underrated white wines. There aren’t many top quality pinot gris wines in Moldova, but the trend is positive, as in the last couple of seasons more winemakers offered pinot gris based wines, so we’ve decided to give it a go as long as it is still young and beautiful fresh. The wine that we’ve selected for the review tonight is Pinot Grigio de Purcari 2014 from Chateau Purcari.
Let’s take a deeper look at the tasting notes and the wine’s review statistics:
Visual
The wine has a pure yellow-green color, it is brilliant and bright, with a transparent straw-yellow rim-color.
Olfactory
The nose is strong, with no signs of wine faults. The first nose is intense and it brings notes of citrus fruits mixed with some savory and mineral notes – lemon, gooseberry, nettle, pineapple, green bell pepper, green apple, straw grass, lemon zest, green grapefruit and a hint of celery. This wine smells of pure summer in the riverside.
Gustatory
The wine is dry, with no hints of residual sugar. It has high alcohol level, high acidity and dry tannin, which makes the wine taste a bit sharp, but crisp, lean and refreshing. The wine has a fair overall balance, it resembles a well made old-world pinot gris, with a citric-mineral, rich and delicious profile.
Aftertaste
The wine has a long finish and a balanced-zesty aftertaste – this wine is a perfect pairing partner for summer fruit salads.
This is definitely a fine Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 89.9 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Last but not least, it is to be mentioned that this wine is highly appreciated on the international scene, as it has been awarded a silver medal by Decanter World Wine Awards and another silver medal by Concours Mondial de Bruxelles – two of the most influential wine tasting competition in the world of wine. This is a great achievement for a Wine of Moldova and one we can all be proud of. As an epilogue, we will leave you with this yummy hint: try and pair this wine with an arugula, pear and blue cheese salad – the heaven’s delight has never been closer.
