WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.
We continue to review Wine of Moldova and keep up with the white wine theme, but this time it’s different, this time we are going to review a white blend, where local grape varieties are blended with international varieties in order to create wines with individual character and unique characteristics. But enough theory, the wine that we are reviewing tonight is the new Feteasca Regala · Riesling 2015 from Château Vartely, and it is part of the famous ‘Individo‘ wine series.
Let’s take a deeper look at the tasting notes and the wine’s review statistics:
Visual
The wine has a bright, yellow-green color, with clear yellowish shades on the rim.
Olfactory
The nose is rich with no signs of wine faults. The first nose brings notes of sweet fruits mixed with nuanced herbal flavors – moist wood, yellow bell pepper, yellow tomato, yellow apple, yellow mirabelle, yellow pear, straw grass, lemon, wetstone and chalkstone. This is a wine both fruity and savory at the same time.
Gustatory
The wine is dry, with no hints of residual sugar. It has high alcohol level, high acidity and dry tannin, which makes the wine taste angular, mouldy and crisp – this is a zesty and young wine, a bit bitter and quite savory. It has a fair overall balance, that makes the wine taste fair, mineral and sharp – like a late summer rain after a a cloudy and windy day.
Aftertaste
The wine has a medium finish and a bitter-crisp aftertaste, that is both, refreshing and austere.
This is definitely a good Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 88.6 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Please click on the chart icon on the left in order to get to the wine rating page, where you can find all the wines we’ve tasted to date.
Last but not least, it is to be mentioned that this is a quite delicate blend – it consists of an aromatic riesling variety, which is blended with an indigenous feteasca regala grape variety. Where riesling adds that mineral extra bit, feteasca regala adds crispness and the citrus-savory profile, that completes the overall blend. To be honest, this wine is quite appealing – it’s fresh, it’s crisp and it is mineral. As we’ve already said it before, this is a Super Tuscan of our own, or should we call it a Super Moldovan?
