WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.
We continue to review Wine of Moldova and we’re switching to the white wine theme, and what a better way to start this topic, than with a sauvignon blanc wine. The wine that we’ve selected for today’s tasting is quite well known here in Moldova and is growing in popularity on the international scene as well, so we’ve decided to give it a go as long as it is still young and fruity – Sauvignon Blanc 2015 from Château Vartely.
Let’s take a deeper look at the tasting notes and the wine’s review statistics:
Visual
The wine has a pure green color, with some nuanced pear-green shades towards the rim of the glass.
Olfactory
The nose is strong, with no signs of wine faults. The first nose is rich and insistent, with nuanced citrus and sweet fruits notes: green pear, kiwi, avocado, gooseberry, green bean, green grass, pear candy, green apricot, underripe melon, lime, underripe quince and some hints of celery.
Gustatory
The wine is dry, with no hints of residual sugar. It has moderate alcohol level, strong acidity and medium tannin, which makes the wine taste crisp, fresh and, what really amazes, it feels herbaceous and citrusy-fruity at the same time. The wine has a fair overall balance – this is a friendly, lean and concentrated wine, with a quite tart but light body – very similar to new world sauvignon blanc wines.
Aftertaste
The wine has a medium finish and a balanced aftertaste – a bit sharp but quite refined overall.
This is definitely a fine Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 89.7 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Conclusion: this is a quite young and zesty wine, with a strong citrusy profile and a light body. This is not a wine to be kept in the cellar as it does not have the prerequisites of an age-worthy wine. But why should it, this wine was not made for cellar, as this is a drink-now wine with a nuanced new-world profile, think more of New Zealand or South Africa kind of sauvignon blanc. We did enjoy it and would definitely recommend if asked for some crisp, light and citrusy wine. Try it yourself.
