WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.
Tonight we are going to review a sauvignon blanc wine – that crisp, dry, aromatic and distinctive wine, that is famous all over the world. The origin of sauvignon blanc is France, but it did burst on the international scene in the 1980’s with an extravagantly forceful, fruity style from New Zealand. Lately, one can find some fine sauvignon blanc wines also from California, South Africa, Australia, Chile and even Romania and Moldova. The wine we’ve selected for the review tonight is no exception, it’s a Sauvignon Blanc 2015 from F’autor, a local winemaker famous for its fine whites and brave reds.
Let’s take a deeper look at the tasting notes and the wine’s review statistics:
Pale green color with shades of straw yellow towards the rim.
The nose is strong, filled mostly with citrus and sweet fruit: green apricot, green grass, lime, green apple, jostaberry, green pear, chalk and some hints of bergamot orange. An instant later comes secondary notes of wormwood, candied pear, pomelo and some subtle hints of cat pee.
The wine is dry, with high but very well integrated alcohol level, high acidity and dry tannin. It tastes crisp, fresh and bitter-chalky, with a nuanced citrusy-mineral profile. This is definitely a new-world style sauvignon blanc wine – rich, insistent and refreshing, with overwhelming acidity. The wine has a fair overall balance between herbs, citrus and fruit, as neither dominates, which is nice.
The wine has a medium-plus finish and a balanced, bitter-crisp aftertaste.
This is definitely a great Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 90.4 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Conclusion: this is a wine in its peak form, ready to drink now – a quite typical sauvignon blanc wine. We would not recommend to keep it any longer for bottle-ageing, as in our opinion, it is better to drink a wine a year too soon than a day too late. To be honest, this wine is surprisingly versatile and it pairs well with a wide range of cuisine, especially with seafood based dishes, like for example some balmain bug risotto. But, if you want to go rebel, and reach a new level of pairing wine with food, we strongly recommend to pair this wine with a pear and parmesan salad – that’s an epic pairing.
