WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.

Today we are going to review a feteasca regala wine –  that fresh, dry and aromatic wine, that is very popular in Romania, and lately in Moldova. Feteasca regala can be made into a crisp, dry wine, similar to sauvignon blanc, but it can also shine as a demi-sweet or dessert wine, similar to Alsace‘s gewurztraminer. The wine we’ve selected for the review today is a Feteasca Regala 2015 from Château Vartely, a local winemaker famous for its fresh whites and bold reds.

Let’s take a deeper look at the tasting notes and the wine’s review statistics:

Olfactory

The nose is strong, filled mostly with sweet fruit: lemon, quince, linden flower, white apple, yellow mirabelle, straw grass and some hints of oak tree core.

Gustatory

The wine is medium-dry, with high alcohol level, high acidity and medium tannin. It tastes lean, crisp and fair, with a nuanced sweet-fruits profile. This is an easy-to-drink wine, friendly and fruity, with overwhelming smoothness. The wine has a fair overall balance between fruit and minerality – it feels opulent and wide, as it lacks a bit of character and structure.

Aftertaste

The wine has a medium finish and a balanced, crisp and smooth aftertaste.

chartsThis is definitely a fine Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 89.5 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Conclusion: this is a wine just a bit over its peak form, definitely ready to drink now. We would not recommend to keep it any longer for bottle-ageing, as in our opinion, it has no prerequisites for ageing. This wine has been already awarded a bronze medal by Decanter World Wine Awards, which is quite an achievement these days. We would strongly recommend to pair it with a pear and blue cheese salad, as the leftover of residual sugar will cut nicely through the dish bitterness. Enjoy.
