WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.
Tonight we are going to review a sauvignon blanc wine – that crisp, dry and aromatic wine, that is famous all over the world. The origin of sauvignon blanc is France, but it did burst onto the international scene in the 1980’s with an extravagantly forceful, fruity style from New Zealand. Lately, one can find fine sauvignon blanc wines in California, South Africa, Australia and even Romania and Moldova. The wine we’ve selected for the review tonight is one of these – Sauvignon Blanc de Purcari 2015 from Purcari – the most famous winemaker in Moldova.
Take a look at the tasting notes bellow and our detailed assessment of the wine:
Brilliant green color with some yellow hues towards the rim.
The nose is strong, filled mostly with herbs and sweet fruit: oolong tea, pomelo, kiwi, green pear, straw grass, gooseberry, locust flower, bergamot orange, lime, chamomile, green grass, lemon, clover, fresh cucumber and some hints of white mulberry.
The wine is off-dry, with high alcohol level, high acidity and ripe tannin. It tastes herbal, fruity and crisp, with a nuanced savory profile. This is definitely a new-world style sauvignon blanc wine – aromatic, off-dry creamy and delicious, with overwhelming acidity. The wine has a fair overall balance between herbs, citrus and fruit, as neither dominates, which is nice.
The wine has a medium finish and a velvety-creamy aftertaste.
This is definitely a great Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 90.7 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Conclusion: this is a wine in its peak form, ready to drink now, as in our opinion, it is better to drink a wine a year too soon than a day too late. To be honest, this wine is surprisingly good – silky, lean and fresh and it pairs well with some baked dorado with thyme or in coupé with some soft cheese, like for example brie or camembert – as the latter one is an epic pairing indeed. Last but not least, we would like to mention that this wine has been awarded a silver medal by Decanter World Wine Awards, and a gold medal by Mundus Vini International Wine Award, which is a very good achievement indeed.
