VINARIA NOBILA | Feteasca Regala | 2015
feteasca regala
WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.
Tonight we are going to review a feteasca regala wine – that fresh, dry and aromatic wine, that is very popular in Romania, and lately in Moldova. Feteasca regala can be made into a crisp, dry wine, similar to sauvignon blanc, but it can also shine as a demi-sweet or dessert wine, similar to Alsace‘s gewurztraminer. The wine we’ve selected for the review tonight is a Feteasca Regala 2015 from Vinaria Nobila, a local winemaker famous for its bold reds.

Take a look at the tasting notes bellow and our detailed assessment of the wine:
Visual
Bright straw yellow color with pastel-yellow hues towards the rim.
Olfactory
The nose is rich, filled mostly with sweet fruit and citrus: pomelo, yellow mirabelle, lemon, yellow apple, yellow pear, quince, pineapple, straw grass, underripe persimmon, nettle and some nuanced mineral flavours.
Gustatory
The wine is off-dry, with high alcohol level, high acidity and green tannin. It tastes citrusy-mineral, green and lean, with a nuanced fruity profile. This wine is a bit bitter and seedy, but still quite mellow and fresh. The wine has a fair overall balance between herbs, citrus and fruit, as neither dominates, which is nice.
Aftertaste
The wine has a medium finish and a balanced, a bit rough, aftertaste.

This is definitely a good Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 88.4 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Please click on the chart icon on the left in order to get to the wine rating page, where you can find all the wines we’ve tasted to date.
Conclusion: this is a wine definitely over its prime, but yet, too green and sharp to be considered a ‘drink now’ wine. It does not lack in character, but what it lacks is a bit of balance, as the tannins are quite sharp for a white wine, which, in fact, is very close to an orange wine in terms of body and structure. We would recommend to pair this wine with fat-rich dishes in order to counter balance the tannin, like for example some fish cakes or fried salmon with pesto and lemon.
