WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.

Tonight we are going to review an unique wine – Symbioz Private Collection Rara Neagra 2009 from Unicorn Estate. This is a very rare and 100% indigenous wine made of rara neagra grapes – a quite famous local variety, which is in high demand in the last couple of years and which is steady reaching its full potential by nicely highlighting the local terroir. Last but not least, what makes this wine special, is the fact that it was aged for 36 months in oak barrels, made from local oak wood. Quite impressive, but enough theory, let’s move on with the tasting.

Visual
Deep, but quite transparent garnet color, with noble shades of ruby towards the rim of the glass.

Olfactory

The nose is strong, filled mostly with red fruits flavours mixed with some savory notes: nutmeg, sour cherry, red plum, red currant, cranberry and some nuanced hints of petroleum. An instant later the nose is filled with notes of red pepper, leather and some subtle bloody-iron hints of raw veal meat.

Gustatory

The wine is extra-dry, with high alcohol level, high acidity and firm tannin. It feels complex and firm, with a nuanced bitter-crisp body. This is a fine and well structured wine, with overwhelming acidity and a well preserved body. The wine has a fair overall balance and a quite nuanced fruity accent.

It has a long finish and an balanced, bitter-seedy aftertaste.

chartsThis is definitely a great Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 91.7 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Please click on the chart icon on the left in order to get to the wine rating page, where you can find all the wines we’ve tasted to date.

Conclusion: this is a bold and complex rara neagra wine, quite close to its top form, a wine that may still benefit from a couple more months of bottle ageing. It may sound a bit strange, but it feels like this wine is yet too young despite its age. This is great wine indeed – one of the best wines with the label ‘Made in Moldova’. Our recommendation would be to pair this wine with red sauce based dishes, like for example a filet mignon steak dressed in red wine sauce. Enjoy!
