WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.

Today we are going to review a cabernet sauvignon wine – the emperor amongst all red varieties and the world’s most famous one. Cabernet sauvignon is grown all over the world in a wide range of climates and regions and by default, it produces a full-bodied red wine with dark fruit flavors and lots of spice. Both, Moldova and Romania have many good to very good cabernet sauvignon wines and we’ve had quite a hard time choosing one for the review today, in the end we’ve decided to fly high and digged deeper in our wine vault – Taraboste Tribute Pur Aristocratic Cabernet Sauvignon Rezerva 2011 from Château Vartely.

Pale garnet color with shades of bright ruby and copper towards the rim of the glass.

Olfactory

The nose is strong, filled mostly with flavours of black and red stone fruits: overripe sour cherry, blackcurrant, black plum, black wild cherry, black mulberry, dried cranberry and rose hips. An instant later the nose is filled with notes of a medium roasted oakwood, red pepper, allspice and some nuanced hints of moist black soil.

Gustatory

The wine is dry, with high alcohol level, moderate acidity and firm tannin. It feels expressive, bold and elegant, with a nuanced fruit-forward profile. This is a new-world type of wine – quite muscular, spicy and at some degree oaky. The wine has a fair overall balance between fruit and barrique and it tastes quite supple towards the end.

Aftertaste

It has a medium-plus finish and an balanced, bitter-seedy aftertaste.

chartsThis is definitely a great Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 90.5 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Conclusion: this is a wine on the decline, definitely over its top form. Some says that a great wine will only improve with age, but we firmly believe that it is always better to drink a wine a year too soon than a day too late, which is the case with this wine. Still, this is a noble and nicely balanced cabernet sauvignon wine and we would recommend to pair it with red wine sauce dishes, like for example a medium-rare filet mignon steak, as this wine requires a complementary pairing in order to elevate its characteristics. Enjoy!
