CRICOVA | Feteasca Neagra | 2015
feteasca neagra
WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.
Tonight we are going to review an indigenous wine that was recently released on the market – Feteasca Neagra 2015 from Cricova. It is made of 100% feteasca neagra grapes – a famous local variety, which is in high demand in the last couple of years. Although feteasca neagra wines exploded to its full potential in Romania, winemakers in Moldova are showing signs of improvement with every new vintage, displaying great promises and ambitions of producing wines of the highest quality.

Take a look at the tasting notes bellow and our detailed assessment of the wine:
Visual
Deep garnet color, with purple hues towards the rim of the glass.
Olfactory
The nose is rich, filled mostly with black fruit flavours: black cherry, blackberry, moist wood, black raspberry, ripe sour cherry, wormwood, black plum and some hints of black soil. An instant later comes secondary and tertiary notes of charred wood, beetroot, plum jam and some hints of smoke.
Gustatory
The wine is dry, with high alcohol level, high acidity and ripe tannin. It tastes bitter-seedy, a bit tart and smoky, with a nuanced astringency and an austere body. This is a sharp, green and a bit aggressive wine, as it feels unbalanced and angular. The wine has a fair overall balance and a nuanced seedy accent.
Aftertaste
It has a medium-plus finish and a balanced, bitter-tart aftertaste.

This is definitely a fine Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 89.3 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Please click on the chart icon on the left in order to get to the wine rating page, where you can find all the wines we’ve tasted to date.
Conclusion: this wine is not yet in its top form, as it is too young to drink now, therefore we would advice for more bottle ageing (at least 3 more years). The wine feels unbalanced at the moment, with overwhelming acidity and rough tannins. We would recommend to pair this wine with moderately spiced high-protein dishes, like for example a grilled veal steak or a meat & cheese board. Enjoy!
