WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.

Tonight we are going to review that one rosé wine that made history from its inception and is still up there, amidst the best local rosé wines – Rosé de Purcari 2018 by Purcari. This wine is a blend made of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and rara neagra varieties and is regarded by many as the best rosé wine ever made in Moldova. The grapes are harvested by hand in the famous Stefan-Voda region, in the proximity of Purcari village and because this wine needs no further introduction, let’s skip the theory part and move on to that one phase that we enjoy the most – the wine tasting!

The nose is strong, filled mostly with sweet and berry fruits flavours: peach, nectarine, strawberry, raspberry, berberry, ripe redcurrant, ripe wolfberry, cranberry, pink mulberry, white apricot, watermelon, peonies, raspberry jam, acacia flower, red apple and cherry blossom.

Gustatory

The wine is dry, with high alcohol level, high acidity and ripe tannin. It tastes bitter-crisp, bold and fruity with a very refreshing mouthfeel. This is a supple, nuanced and firm rosé wine, with a quite muscular body and a touch of alcoholic warmth showing up on the palate. The wine has a fair overall balance, as it feels expressive, sharp and fruity-floral. This is a quite powerful rosé wine with a bit too much angularity in there, still, a real crowd pleaser and refreshing wine.

The wine has a long finish and a balanced, bitter-crisp aftertaste.

chartsThis is definitely a fine Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 91.0 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Please click on the chart icon on the left in order to get to the wine rating page, where you can find all the wines we’ve tasted to date.

Conclusion: this is a fine rosé wine that has yet to reach the summit of its prime form: muscular, refreshing and quite appealing, with a nuanced bitter-zesty accent, yet a wine that is still a bit off its optimal balance. We would suggest to give it a bit more time for bottle ageing (6 to 9 months should be enough) in order to round up its edges and express its elegance in a better way. Anyway, this is one of the best rosé wines we’ve tasted so far – complex and fruity-floral, with an immersion of flavour saturation across the palate. You may pair it with any fish-based dishes, as long as the fish is either red or shellfish, like for example some shrimp saganaki or salmon cream cheese spread. Noroc!
