PALOMAR CREEK | Sauvignon Blanc | Marlborough | 2017
sauvignon blanc
Today we are going to review a surprisingly good wine – Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough 2017 from Palomar Creek. This is a single varietal sauvignon blanc wine made of grapes that were sourced from vineyards across the famous Marlborough region, and because it comes from New Zealand, the place where this variety is now a religion, what we have here is a classic sauvignon blanc wine – as classic as sauvignon blanc can be. Sauvignon Blanc means ‘wild white’ and guess what – this one is a wild beast indeed, with unique herbaceous flavors, like green bell pepper, gooseberry and fresh cut grass, but enough with all that theory, without further ado let’s get straight to the tasting!

Take a look at the tasting notes below and our detailed assessment of the wine:
Visual
Very clear straw-white color with pale hay-yellow hues towards the rim of the glass.
Olfactory
The nose is strong, filled mostly with citrusy-floral and herbal flavours: blackcurrant leaf, green pear, kiwi, wormwood, gooseberry, lime, pineapple, fresh cut grass, lemon, green apple, hay, acacia flower, elderflower, straw grass, camomile and some hints of green bergamot.
Gustatory
The wine is dry, with high alcohol level, high acidity and ripe tannin. It feels elegant, expressive and refreshing, with a nuanced bitter-crisp accent. This is a very appealing and delightful sauvignon blanc wine, with overwhelming acidity and zesty mouthfeel. It has a god overall balance and a quite complex palate, as it feels fine, lean and quite herbaceous – indeed a blueprint sauvignon blanc wine.
Aftertaste
It has a long finish and a velvety, bitter-crisp but elegant aftertaste.

This is definitely a great Wine of New Zealand and the overall rating says the same, with 94.7 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Please click on the chart icon on the left in order to get to the wine rating page, where you can find all the wines we’ve tasted to date.
Conclusion: this is definitely a genuine, new world sauvignon blanc wine – crisp, elegant and citrusy-herbal – a fine wine in its prime form that can age for another 9 to 12 months, but our recommendation is to drink this wine today, as long as it is still young and beautiful, as this wine can easily serve as an example of typicity for new world sauvignon blanc wines. We suggest to try and pair this wine with pineapple & spinach salad or pear & pomegranate salad, as this wine screams for tropical freshness. Enjoy!
